TEAMWORK – Renault Emblème: optimized aerodynamics like in Formula 1

Published on

Renault Emblème is the embodiment of an extraordinary challenge: to draw up a vision of a low-carbon, versatile family vehicle. Engineers, designers and aerodynamic experts joined forces, pooling their know-how. They explored, tested and iterated to give this concept car an aerodynamic design that preserves the efficiency of its unique dual-energy electric motor. Dive into the heart of this collective adventure, where shared intelligence drives innovation.

Renault Emblème - a 100% electric concept car - makes aerodynamics and energy efficiency the essence of its design. Renault's technical and design teams have joined forces, benefiting from the unique expertise of the BWT Alpine Formula One Team. Using cutting-edge F1 tools, Emblem has been designed in a totally digital way, fine-tuning every detail to achieve the best active and passive aerodynamics. From the overall shape of the vehicle to the most subtle bodywork elements, each line responds to a single imperative: to increase efficiency. This collective narrative is punctuated by the voices of the experts who have shaped Renault Emblème.

"This level of decarbonization maximization required us to achieve excellent efficiency"

“Renault Emblème was born from a challenge: that of creating a family vehicle emitting 90% less greenhouse gas (CO2e) compared to an equivalent vehicle produced today over its entire life cycle (“ from craddle to grave”). This unprecedented degree of maximization of decarbonization required us to achieve excellent efficiency for a C-segment electric vehicle. To achieve this, we turned to the BWT Alpine Formula One Team to obtain exceptional aerodynamics.»

"We have shared our state-of-the-art tools"

« Aerodynamics is a primary quest in Formula 1. To achieve this, investments are considerable. So that Renault Emblème can obtain optimal aerodynamics, we have happily made our cutting-edge tools available to the BWT Alpine Formula One Team. Pooling tools and knowledge is always beneficial for everyone. »

“Optimizing aerodynamics has had an impact on every feature of Emblème”

« The meticulous optimisation of aerodynamics and mass has had an impact on the overall spirit of Emblème’s design, but also on each feature, each element that makes it up, to demonstrate what Renault believes the design language of efficiency could be. »

“Active and passive aerodynamic attributes direct the air in 3 directions.”

« The technical resources we benefited from allowed us to confirm or refute the relevance of each technological choice made on Renault Emblème and then to refine their effectiveness. On this vehicle the active and passive aerodynamic attributes are very numerous to direct the air in 3 directions: at the top it is guided to the long rear spoiler, towards the solid wheels which then lead the air all the way without swirling of the vehicle and finally down towards the flat floor which ends with an active diffuser. With such technical expectations, our need for help from the BWT Alpine Formula One Team was great! »

“A design developed even before its physical existence”

“The digital twin technology and cutting-edge digital simulation equipment of the BWT Alpine Formula One Team made it possible to develop the design of the entire Renault Emblème with excellence in air penetration and all this even before its physical existence. »

“A sporty and seductive design”

“Sporty and seductive, the overall ‘shooting brake’ styling meets the objectives of optimizing air penetration and controlling aerodynamic flows without ever penalizing interior habitability. Emblème has been designed as an everyday family car. The active aerodynamic features respect these specifications, while reconciling discretion and efficiency.”

“Saving valuable time and CO2e”

“As part of a fruitful collaboration with the Renault and Alpine teams, digital wind tunnel iterations made it possible to optimize passive and active aerodynamics in record time without making a model. A precious saving in time and CO2e that is absolutely essential to meet the decarbonization challenge that Renault Emblème is making a reality. »
