About 2G/3G mobile
networks shutdown
In Europe, the gradual deactivation of 2G and 3G networks by mobile operators has been underway since 2024 and is expected to be completed by 2029 depending on the country.
This situation may have an impact on the operation of widely used equipment and products (e.g. remote monitoring systems, elevators, home medical devices, etc.).
The shutdown of 2G/3G mobile networks may also affect certain features of vehicles from all manufacturers:
- The emergency call service (eCall)*, required by regulation for vehicles that obtained a New Type approval in Europe between 31 March 2018 and 31 December 2025
* when provided through 2G/3G connectivity - Some services for vehicles connected by 2G or 2G/3G modules.
These features will not work in areas where 2G/3G networks have been interrupted.
Renault Group continues to assess the impacts of the 2G and 3G shutdown for each of its brands, model by model and country by country, with a view to identifying whether alternatives are possible.
This page will be updated regularly as the situation evolves.
Q&A
Will Renault/Dacia/Alpine vehicles be able to continue to circulate after the shutdown of the 2G/3G networks?
Manufactured and approved in accordance with the regulations in force at the time they were placed on the market, the vehicles will still be allowed to operate after the shutdown of 2G and 3G networks.
The emergency call service (eCall) is present in all M1 (Passenger Vehicles) and N1 (Light Commercial Vehicles) vehicles that have received New Type approval in Europe from 31 March 2018.
This system allows the vehicle to make an automatic call to the emergency services in the event of an accident with an airbag activation (European emergency number 112).
All Renault, Dacia and Alpine vehicles that have received a New Type approval from 31 March 2018 are equipped with an emergency call service (eCall).
To find out whether a vehicle is equipped with it, simply check the ceiling light between the driver’s seat and the front passenger seat: if an « SOS » button is present, the vehicle is fitted with the emergency call service (eCall).
RENAULT: Certain vehicles fitted with the R-LINK, R-LINK Evolution or R-LINK 2 multimedia systems and for which a subscription to connected services is active.
The connected services of Renault vehicles fitted with the easy link and openR link multimedia systems use 4G and will not be impacted by the shutdown of the 2G/3G networks.
DACIA: No vehicles are affected; Dacia vehicles with connected services use the 4G network.
ALPINE: No vehicles are affected; Alpine vehicles with connected services use the 4G network.
MOBILIZE: No vehicles are affected.
