With more than ten years of experience in electric mobility, Groupe Renault has established itself as a pioneer of the subject. And it shows no signs of slowing! No fewer than 8 new 100% electric models and 12 new hybrid and rechargeable hybrid vehicles will be launched by 2022. Here is a selection of what’s to come.
More than ever, Twingo proves itself as the queen of city-driving, adding a new 100% electric model to its combustion-powered versions. It contains a 22 kWh battery that neither encroaches on the interior nor the trunk space. New Twingo Electric exchanges its combustion-powered engine for an 82 horsepower electric motor made in Cléon, Normandy (France). It offers instant torque for optimal reactivity when driving in traffic. Thanks to its three levels of regenerative braking, which allow for optimal range, a fully-charged (WLTP City cycle) New Twingo Electric can cover up to 250 kilometers. Equipped with the Caméléon charger designed for the new ZOE, New Twingo Electric can be charged on alternative current up to 22 kilowatts. This type of rapid charging station, very common in cities, allows drivers to recover around 80 kilometers of range in just half an hour. And let’s not forget, New Twingo Electric still offers the best turning circle on the market, at just 4.3 meters!
The Clio E-TECH, Renault’s “full hybrid” model, is designed for people who want to get a taste of the electric life without having to change their habits or need a charging station, since the Clio E-Tech charges while driving. It combines a new-generation 1.6L gas engine with two electric motors, all of which are linked to an innovative multimodal dog clutch transmission without a clutch pedal, inspired by the brand’s expertise in Formula 1 racing cars. The 140 horsepower Clio E-TECH always starts up in electric mode, and charges during braking and deceleration without any driver intervention. In the city, it can remain in electric mode up to 80% of the time, which allows for up to 40% less consumption than an equivalent combustion-powered vehicle, and less than 100 g/km of CO2 emissions.
Captur E-TECH Plug-in is two-cars-in-one, offering maximum flexibility for both everyday driving and longer trips. It is a hybrid car that can be charged like any other electric vehicle. As a result, in the city and during short everyday trips, the Captur E-TECH Plug-in functions in 100% electric mode, with a range of up to 65 kilometers in urban driving (WLTP City cycle) and a maximum speed of 135 km/h. For weekend trips or vacations, it can be used as a normal hybrid car and travel any distance. It is powered by a 1.6L gas engine and two electric motors for a total of 160 horsepower. Its 9.8 kWh battery can be charged by plugging the vehicle into a domestic outlet or public charging station. Captur E-TECH also comes with the “E-Save” function, which minimizes use of the electric battery in order to preserve its charge for later use (city driving, for example.)
From its station wagon to its sedan model, Mégane is a flagship of the Renault line, with 7 million cars sold since 1995. It was given a makeover for the New Mégane E-TECH Plug-in, a rechargeable hybrid able to travel up to 65 km in 100% electric mode. Like the Captur E-TECH Plug-in, it combines a 1.6L gas engine with two electric motors fed by a 9.8 kWh battery to offer an all-electric range of several dozen kilometers of everyday driving, all while offering maximum flexibility for longer trips, during which it works like a traditional hybrid car. No matter the context, it starts up in electric mode, silently and with instant torque, for optimal responsiveness. The Megane E-TECH Plug-in is charged like any other electric car, using a domestic outlet or a public charging station.
All-electric power on long-distance trips is possible with the Kangoo Z.E. Hydrogen and the Master Z.E. Hydrogen! A European leader in small trucks and vans, Renault has added these two new models to its line of utility vehicles that push the limits of electric vehicles. They combine electric power (motor + batteries) with a hydrogen fuel cell. This fuel cell reacts with the oxygen in the air to generate electricity that is used to charge the battery, power the engine, and drastically increase the vehicle’s range. The Kangoo Z.E. Hydrogen and the Master Z.E. Hydrogen offer 370 and 350 kilometers of range respectively, which is up to three times as much as the 100% electric versions! In addition, hydrogen-powered vehicles can be recharged in less than 10 minutes. Even better, these models release only water vapor, which means they will continue to be able to access urban zones restricted to low-emissions vehicles (LEZs) in the long term. The utility vehicles of the future are already here!
Every branch of Groupe Renault is involved in the electric movement! This can be seen in the latest Dacia show car. Spring is an all-electric, 5-door vehicle for up to 4 passengers, heralding the arrival of a particularly affordable series model. With its SUV look, Spring comes in a smaller size (3.73 meters long) perfectly suited to city driving. It also offers a range of 200 kilometers (WLTP,) which is enough for most everyday driving needs. Dacia Spring is designed for urban and suburban mobility, and also for carsharing services. It is expected to hit the market in 2021.
Renault continues to explore the future of electric vehicles, as is demonstrated by its latest concept car, Morphoz, built on the new CMF-EV platform specially designed for electrification. This 100% electric modular crossover car charges through induction and presents a vision of mobility post-2025. Morphoz has two different configurations: City and Travel. In City mode, it is 4.4 meters-long and has a 40 kWh battery with a range of 400 kilometers. This mode is best suited for everyday use. In Travel mode, Morphoz extends to 4.8 meters-long, allowing for both a roomier interior and the addition of an extra 50 kWh battery pack. Morphoz therefore has 90 kWh of power and 700 kilometers of range. It also has 218 horsepower, instead of just 136. Perfect for long trips! This concept car also offers Level 3 autonomy, designed for freeway driving and traffic jams.
In addition to its technical specifications, Morphoz also has a distinctive design, with details and an interior that herald the arrival of a new family of electric models to be released by Renault in the next few years. Stay tuned!
