Renault Sofasa was set up in 1969 in Envigado (Colombia). Since the Renault 4 became an icon of Colombian motoring when it was first produced in 1970, 17 models have been manufactured at the Envigado plant which currently produces 4 of the best-selling cars in the country: the Renault Sandero, the Logan, the Sandero Stepway and the Duster.

Renault-Sofasa, Great Place to Work, celebrates its 55th anniversary

For more than five decades, Renault-Sofasa, now considered a Colombian brand of French origin, has been involved in the development of the country's economy, helping to create jobs and increase the country's production capacity. Production of the Renault Kwid will begin in 2025, optimising the use of the plant's installed capacity and creating new long-term jobs in the country.

Back to the key dates
  • 1969: creation of Sofasa held by Renault and IFI (State organization).
  • 1970: official opening of the Envigado Renault plant in Medellin.
  • 1989: acquisition of the IFI’s stake by Renault, raising its own stake in Sofasa to 98%. Sofasa becomes Sofasa Renault.
  • 1999: manufacturing of Mégane.
  • 2001: manufacturing of Clio begins, followed by Clio II.
  • 2005: launch of Logan production.
  • 2012: launch of Duster production.
  • 2013: 1 million assembled vehicles.
  • 2019: Renault Sofasa celebrated its 50th birthday. Acceleration of the digital transformation of manufacturing processes. Launch of production of New Logan and New Sandero (included Stepway).
  • 2020: celebration of 50th birthday of the plant.
  • 2021: launch of New Renault Duster.
  • 2022: Renault-Sofasa keeps its leadership in the Colombian automotive market for the fifth consecutive year.
  • 2023: Renault-Sofasa confirmed an investment up to €100 million to install a new platform in its Envigado plant.
