Alpine A390_β: How Alpine’s very first sport fastback show car manages to combine versatility and sportiness.
Published on
The new A390_β show car, presented at the Paris Motor Show this week, introduces Alpine’s upcoming and very first 100% electric sport fastback model. The brand is determined to succeed in a new segment where versatility and performance must come together. So, how do you design a model that offers the same driving sensations as an A110, but with room and comfort for several passengers? Fabrice Izzillo, A390 Product Performance Leader at Alpine, explains the fundamentals of this exceptional show car.

What is Alpine trying to express with this A390_β show car?
A390_β is the second vehicle in Alpine's Dream Garage. As such, it embodies the next stage of the brand's revival as it embarks squarely into the electric era, and represents its expansion into a new segment. Every aspect of this show car expresses a true duality. On the one hand, superior sportiness, high performance, agility and perceived lightness when driving. On the other, a versatile car, comfortable for everyday use.
Alpine confirms its strategy with the A390_, which combines very high performance compatible with low carbon emission targets.
What does this future “sport fastback” model represent for Alpine?
With its unique “sport fastback” silhouette and the use of cutting-edge technology such as Active Torque Vectoring, the A390 will be a true Alpine. It will be based on the three pillars of the brand that have already been deployed since the A110 and serve as the foundation for all our models.
First of all, Alpine's lightness, which is a true state of mind with an efficient use of mass, but also in the way it feels when you're behind the wheel. The brand's engineers have worked hard to deliver the same sensations as in an A110. Our first track tests confirm this, with equivalent performance and agility.
Next, Alpine wants to provide its customers with an “exhilirating experience”, whatever the segment or vehicle type. Every journey in an Alpine should be a celebration of travel and the pleasure of the open road. For the A390, which will have 5 seats in its production version, we're adding an extra dimension, which is to enjoy this experience every day and share it with others.
Finally, this model will be a concentrate of French know-how of which we are particularly proud. In addition to the electric motors and batteries assembled in the Group's factories in France, or the Alpine Dieppe Jean Rédélé factory where the vehicles are assembled, we can count on a constellation of first-rate French partners including Michelin and Devialet.
All these elements combined in the brand's very first “sport fastback” will enable Alpine to expand its footprint and reach new customers, more versatile in their habits and attracted by a high-end offering.

How does electric motoring change the game for Alpine?
Thanks to the passion of Alpine engineers, the harmony between performance and an electric drivetrain is undeniable. This combination delivers incredible un-interrupted torque, and the acceleration and responsiveness are instantaneous, so why shouldn’t we take advantage of it? This action/reaction effect is very Alpine: the driver demands and the car delivers immediately.
The electric drivetrain meets two challenges: precise feedback for sporty driving and the need for an emotional driving experience. All the driver's senses are stimulated, including the sense of hearing, thanks to Alpine Drive Sound, processed from the engine's actual harmonics and played back in the cabin in direct relation to the driver's actions. That too, is very Alpine. These factors, combined with our objectives to reduce CO2 emissions, make electrification a real asset for the brand.
