What better way to confirm the technical, logistical and practical viability of a technology than to test it under real-life conditions? This is the objective of INCIT-EV, a pan-European project that is putting seven innovative charging systems for electric vehicles to the test. Discover this large-scale “demonstration” for the development of electric mobility in Europe.

INCIT-EV: a European project to support electromobility

INCIT-EV is a European test project for innovative electric vehicle charging solutions. Its objective: to encourage the development of electric mobility, starting by understanding users’ needs and then by developing suitable charging technologies. The project, which runs from January 2020 to December 2023 (48 months) is divided into two phases: a research and preparation phase, then a so-called “demonstration” phase where seven technologies will be tested under real conditions, starting from the second quarter of 2022. Initiated and coordinated by Groupe Renault, and supported and financed by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation program, the project brings together 33 players and partners from deliberately varied backgrounds (industrials, universities, institutes, city authorities, start-ups, SMBs), all experts in their fields.

7 innovative charging technologies tested in 5 countries

INCIT-EV focuses on the user, aiming in particular to improve their electromobility experience in order to help its large-scale adoption. To this end, the seven recharging solutions concern the urban environment, but also long-distance travel.

A dynamic induction charging system will be tested in France: in Paris for the urban zone, Versailles (near Paris) for the suburban zone and long-range at speeds of up to 130 km/h.
It’s on the edge of Tallin, Estonia, that tests on high-voltage charging systems will take place (at least 150 kW instead of the 50 kW on fast charge terminals today.)
Amsterdam and Utrecht, in the Netherlands, will pave the way for bidirectional smart charging, which integrates the electric vehicle and its storage capacity within the electrical network management (vehicle-to-grid, or V2G.)
As for low power bidirectional charging (including two-wheeled vehicles) and static wireless charging, they will be tested in Zaragoza, Spain.
Lastly, Italy, specifically Turin, will install a charging hub in a parking lot with three different types of charging systems: bidirectional, fast charge and static wireless charging.

Groupe Renault: the project initiator and coordinator

True to its spirit as a pioneer of the electric vehicle, and its aspiration to see electric mobility rolled out on a large scale, Groupe Renault has brought together around thirty players from eight countries — Germany, Spain, Estonia, France, Italy, Netherlands, Slovenia and Turkey — to bring this project before the European Commission. It responds to the need to test, in real-life conditions, all the innovations in charging technology, as well as to structure the electric vehicle ecosystem in order to better promote electromobility in Europe. Groupe Renault is also in charge of the project’s coordination and its effective roll-out (technical, budgetary etc.) The results of these full-scale tests and the development of a digital simulation platform and a decision support system will make it possible to envisage their reproduction initially on two main sites — Bursa in Turkey and the island of Norderney in Germany — before considering an expansion throughout Europe.
