My electric car’s battery: should I buy or lease?

The battery is one of the most expensive components of an electric car. Customers have several options: to buy their car and battery simultaneously, to lease both car and battery with the opportunity to purchase or to lease just the battery.

Battery purchase: what are the advantages?

A performance guarantee

If purchased, the Renault ZOE battery is guaranteed for a period of 8 years or a distance of 160,000 km. For Kangoo Z.E. and Master Z.E., this warranty covers a period of 5 years or 100,000 km.

Technological advances make it possible to offer durable batteries with an energy capacity that diminishes very little over time, despite constant charging and discharging. On average, electric car batteries operate at between 70 and 75% of their starting energy capacity after 8 to 10 years of use. However, this figure can of course vary depending on how much a vehicle is used.

Improvements in energy capacity are accompanied by increased range. For example, the Z.E. 50 battery, with a capacity of 52 kWh, provides the new Renault ZOE with a range of up to 395 km according to the WLTP** standard. That means a 25% increase in range compared to its predecessor, the Z.E. 40 battery.

An appealing investment for frequent drivers

The purchase cost of a battery is equivalent to leasing one for 100 months, or more than eight years. Purchasing a battery will therefore appeal to drivers who cover a large number of kilometres each year, since there are no limits on the distance they travel. Compare that to the monthly leasing cost, which does vary according to the number of kilometres driven.

The advantages of battery leasing

Spreading out the cost over time

Leasing the battery diminishes the purchase cost of the car. There is no need to pay an additional sum when the vehicle is purchased: payments are taken monthly over several years. It’s a similar and familiar arrangement to that of other products, such as a telephone, TV or internet plan.
You can choose the option best suited to your needs based on the number of kilometres you drive in a year, and then adjust it as necessary.
And finally, should you no longer have use for your Renault ZOE, the battery rental lease is transferable, without any cancellation free.

Free battery replacement

A second indisputable advantage of battery leasing is its free replacement in case of a loss of battery capacity*. This offer includes both new and used electric vehicles sold across the Renault network. The manufacturer also takes responsibility for the battery throughout its life cycle, even through the recycling stage.

Assistance in the event of a breakdown

Full breakdown coverage is also included in the battery leasing contract, including in the case of a power failure. In such instances, the car is picked up and taken to the nearest major charging point in an 80 km radius, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This way you can drive with complete peace of mind!

Buy or lease your battery, the choice is yours

Thanks to the advances made in battery performance and durability over the last few years, both leasing and purchasing each have several advantages. To buy or lease a battery is therefore a personal choice which comes down to your own spending habits and the number of kilometres you travel each month. Whichever you choose, you will enjoy a product with a high life expectancy and benefit from all of Groupe Renault’s expertise in the field of electric vehicles.

* Warranty levels depends on the vehicle model.
**WLTP range for a standardized cycle (57% urban driving, 25% suburban driving, 18% highway driving).
